The E36 318is was released as a coupe in 1992 with M42 engine and manual transmission only. Automatic transmission became an option shortly after. The M42 was upgraded from the E30 series with a dual length variable induction system, knock sensor, and a different ancillary drive belt system (which was further changed a couple of years later). From late 1994 buyers could choose an 'Individual' or 'Sports Option Pack' which consisted of options such as an M3 body kit, 16" 5-spoke alloy wheels, half suede sports seats, and unique colours. In 1996 the 318is series changed to the M44 engine which was 1.9-litre capacity and featured many improvements over the M42 engine. Changes included roller valve actuation, MAF sensor, and various lighter engine internal components. A South African-built four door sedan version of the 318is was sold during 1997. It featured body coloured bumpers, fog lamps, outside temperature display, 15" alloys, and half leather sports seats. In 1998 the 'Sport' model became available. It featured an M3 body kit, 16" wheels and half suede sports seats. Several colours were offered, including some not seen before on the 318is. The E36 318is was discontinued in October 1999 and the 318is badge has not again been seen on subsequent three series (E46 and E90). 318is (E36) Model Timeline
